About TMR

Particularly beneficial for individuals with upper arm or lower extremity amputations, targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) works to transfer the nerves in the residual limb to improve prosthetic control and to avoid issues with nerve pain or phantom limb pain. As one of only a handful of doctors in the Greater Houston, TX area to offer TMR, Dr. Gordon can help both patients at the time of amputation or those months to years later that are suffering from chronic pain issues.

During a TMR procedure, the nerves are reassigned to targeted muscles to help avoid a symptomatic neuroma and can amplify that muscle signal for prosthetic control.

If you have had a prior amputation and continue to suffer from chronic pain, this procedure has the potential to drastically improve your condition and has minimal downtime.

During a complete consultation at Gordon Plastic Surgery at The Woodlands, TX, Dr. Gordon will evaluate your current condition to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. To learn more about TMR, schedule a consultation with Dr. Gordon today.

ABOUT RPNI

Another procedure that is beneficial to individuals with upper arm or lower extremity amputations is Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI) surgery. Similar to TMR, this surgery was originally designed for prosthetic control and has shown to prevent neuroma formation by providing a free muscle graft as a target for peripheral nerve ingrowth. As one of only a handful of doctors in the Greater Houston, TX area to offer RPNI, Dr. Gordon can help both patients at the time of amputation or those post-amputation that are suffering from chronic pain issues.

During an RPNI procedure, the neuroma is excised and the nerve ending is wrapped with a thin muscle graft. This not only protects the free nerve ending but gives the nerve a new job to innervate the muscle graft.

To learn more about RPNI, schedule a consultation with Dr. Gordon today.

What to Expect

During the consultation, Dr. Gordon will discuss multiple treatment options and develop the most optimal surgical plan. Currently, both TMR and RPNI procedures can be used in combination with different nerve endings to maximize surgery success.

The surgery has minimal downtime and is often performed as an outpatient surgery. Dr. Gordon and his staff will outline the treatment plan, post-operative course, and be available to answer all questions throughout the process.

With TMR and RPNI procedures, amputee patients have the opportunity to receive more functional prosthetic devices and reduce chronic nerve pain and phantom limb pain.
