About Liposuction

Despite how much you diet and exercise, you can still be bothered by stubborn pockets of fat that keep you from feeling completely confident in how you look. Gordon Plastic Surgery is proud to offer the latest techniques to effectively remove fat from certain body parts. Lipo, or liposuction surgery, is a body contouring procedure that reduces fat from the flanks, tummy, buttocks, and thighs to produce a leaner appearance. This fat removal surgery at our practice can be blended to treat several body parts. During your initial visit, The Woodlands, TX board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Gordon will examine areas of concern so you can reach your aesthetic goals. We will strive to help you feel and look your very best.

Ideal Candidates

Liposuction is an ideal procedure for those who are at a healthy weight but have pesky areas of fat that have been hard to lose with even the most healthy lifestyle. Patients contemplating liposuction should have skin that is taut because liposuction is not a treatment for loose skin. It is also important to understand that liposuction is not a treatment for losing weight. Females having liposuction should be past pregnancies as this may compromise the results. During your consultation for surgery, Dr. Gordon will discuss realistic expectations.

Surgical Technique

This treatment is completed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. A punch-hole incision is made through the skin so a cannula can be placed. A cannula is a special tool that helps loosen the fatty tissue as it is being vacuumed out. Once the fat deposits have been removed, Dr. Gordon will seal the incision. Based on the number of areas treated, your procedure could take several hours. In the dedicated area for recovery, your post-op team will help manage any discomfort and care for your treated areas until your discharge.

What to Expect

You may need to stay at home for recovery from liposuction for 1 – 3 weeks, depending on the number of treatments performed and the amount of fat removed. It is typical to experience swelling and bruising for one or two weeks, and you can have the stitches removed on day seven to day ten. The most important thing to do after having liposuction surgery is to allow your body time to recover and heal. When you are ready to return to your job after your surgery, you need to remember to go slow. To increase your strength and stamina, try walking and exercising with light workouts as approved by Dr. Gordon. Keep in mind, you may notice some improvements soon after your surgery, but it will take 6 – 10 months before your new body contour and shape is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about nonsurgical liposuction?
There are many nonsurgical options to reduce body fat. While some of these nonsurgical procedures can help reduce mild to moderate fat pockets, surgical liposuction is best for most patients. Liposuction surgery produces more dramatic and consistent results. Talk to Dr. Gordon about nonsurgical liposuction in your consultation. He will be able to go over the benefits and drawbacks of both methods and help you decide which is best for you and your unique goals.

What about cellulite and loose skin?
Liposuction surgery only addresses excess fat. If you have loose skin, Dr. Gordon may recommend combining liposuction with a surgical body lift. Liposuction is often done with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, to produce the best results. During your consultation, talk to Dr. Gordon about your concerns, like cellulite and loose skin, so a comprehensive treatment plan can be created.

Will I have scars?
Since liposuction is a surgical procedure, incisions will need to be made and stitched. This will leave scars, but Dr. Gordon does his best to reduce their appearance. This includes making thin incisions in the natural folds of your body or in less visible areas. After your surgery, Dr. Gordon or a member of his team will teach you how to care for your stitches so they heal properly and eventually fade.

Will my results last?
Before you have liposuction surgery, it is important to be committed to maintaining your results. While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in your body, you can still gain and lose weight. Dr. Gordon suggests that you be at or close to a healthy weight prior to liposuction. Afterward, it is best to stay within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Getting pregnant after liposuction will also alter your results; however, a second surgery or mommy makeover may be performed to refresh your body.
