About Breast Augmentation

Breast enhancement surgery is a procedure that adds volume to breasts to result in a fuller look. It is generally known to be one of the most common cosmetic surgeries, granting women who are unhappy with their breast size the opportunity for improvement. With the help of implants, this cosmetic treatment improves breast size and shape, creating a beautiful and balanced outcome. The Woodlands, TX board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Gordon is highly trained in this procedure and performs many breast augmentations each year. When you have your consultation at Gordon Plastic Surgery, Dr. Gordon will listen to your aesthetic desires and concerns and inform you of all of the choices available while also customizing a surgical plan to reach your personal goals.

Implant Options

During your initial consultation with Dr. Gordon, the appropriate implant will be chosen based on your body frame, as well as the results you hope to attain. Implants for augmentation come in varying shapes, sizes, textures, and profiles — all of which are taken into consideration in order to attain the desired look. Still, the most commonly used implants are saline or silicone, both widely chosen and approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It is important to mention that women considering implants made with saline must be at least 18 years of age while patients must be at least 22 years old in order to receive surgery with silicone.

Size

Implant size is chosen based on the cubic centimeters (CCs) of silicone or saline used. To choose the appropriate volume, Dr. Gordon will measure how much native breast tissue exists and the size you hope to achieve. During surgery, it is common for Dr. Gordon to temporarily switch out multiple implants to get a better idea on a better fit.

Shape

Implants come in either a round or teardrop shape. Both of these shapes are commonly used; however, the majority of our patients prefer a round-shaped implant. It often looks and feels more natural while adding a fullness to the top of the breast that most patients want.

Profile

Breast implant profile refers to how far out the implant looks (projection). Meaning, this is what you see from the side angle. Most projections include low to extra high ranges.

Making Your Choices

We understand all of the considerations may seem overwhelming, but determining the correct implant is easy once the objectives are understood during the consultation. These considerations, combined with the experience of Dr. Gordon, make certain the right outcome is achieved.

Ideal Candidates

The choice to go through with breast augmentation surgery is personal. If you are contemplating this surgery, it is important you do it for yourself. You should be healthy with breasts that are developed and be the appropriate age to have implants. If you are unhappy with the size and shape of your breasts, you may benefit from this cosmetic breast treatment. In addition, if your breasts have been affected by weight loss or pregnancy, this procedure can help restore shape and fullness.

Surgical Technique

Incision type, as well as implant location, are factors that will need to be made prior to surgery. During breast augmentation, an incision is created and then the implant will be slipped into its position. There are two techniques that may be chosen for implant placement. These include either submuscular placement (under the pec muscle) or behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. Where to insert the implant is based on varying factors, including the overall type and size of the implant, along with the expertise of Dr. Gordon. Regardless of the incision, scarring is generally unnoticeable. Placement and location are determined based on your implant size, activity level, and body type.

What to Expect

Cosmetic breast surgery is an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. Once the incision is made, the implant chosen for enhancement will be placed through the incision opening and deposited into a surgically created pocket, and then fitted into its proper position. After this process, the incision is closed with skin adhesives or sutures. Each patient will be taken into a recovery area and observed prior to being released. You will be instructed to continue wearing a medical sports bra to assist with swelling. Several days after surgery, the swelling will start to slowly go away, and the breasts will start to look and feel normal as they get used to their new position. While individual results vary, most patients can engage in everyday activities within a few days; however, exercise should be avoided for roughly a couple of months. This surgery produces beautiful outcomes that look and feel normal. Oftentimes, this treatment can be a life-changer for many patients, offering them the chance to feel more comfortable in their own skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your treatment plan might include implants, a breast lift, or both. A breast lift removes excess skin and improves the breasts while implants enhance the size and shape of the breasts. During your consultation with Dr. Gordon, he will listen to your needs and goals before discussing your treatment options. An augmentation and lift are usually a part of a mommy makeover to revitalize the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, be sure to tell Dr. Gordon during your consultation. It is usually possible to breastfeed after implants with the right placement and technique. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can affect your results so it is better to wait until your family is complete to have breast augmentation.

Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you want to replace or remove your implants. If this happens, Dr. Gordon can perform breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your old implants can either be replaced with different implants or simply removed. If you want to have your implants removed, you may need to have excess skin removed because larger implants can stretch your skin. For any questions or concerns after your augmentation surgery, schedule a consultation at Gordon Plastic Surgery to discuss your options.

Do implants cause breast cancer?
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is investigating a link between implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). This is not breast cancer but a cancer of the immune system. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), implant-related ALCL is very rare and when caught early, it is easy to treat.  This has been linked to textured implant devices and Dr. Gordon has only ever used smooth devices in practice. Dr. Gordon encourages all patients with implants to get frequent screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Gordon Plastic Surgery if you notice any concerns, such as swelling or other visible changes.
