The use of lip filler has been gaining popularity over the years as more and more people are venturing into the world of dermal fillers. It’s no longer just for celebrities and social media influencers. While lip filler can bring thin lips to life and beautifully compliment the face, it can also easily be overdone and end up giving you the dreaded “duck lips” that most fear. It’s important to understand the basics of lip filler & how choosing a skilled injector is the key to giving you the best results. At Gordon Plastic Surgery in The Woodlands, TX, all injections are performed by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven Gordon.

What is lip filler?

There are 2 primary types of fillers: Temporary and permanent. Permanent fillers are just that, permanent. They cannot be dissolved. These require a surgeon and involves a small 2mm incision through which a silicone implant is placed. The other is the most common option, temporary dermal fillers. It’s a Hyaluronic Acid compound and can be quickly dissolved at any time. As this is our preferred method, we will be focused on the temporary filler options.

When looking at lip filler you will come across many names such as Juvederm® and Restylane®. Each of the fillers offer a unique result, therefore at Gordon Plastic Surgery, Dr. Gordon does a complete consultation to be able to choose which filler is right for you. For example, for those patients who are wanting a more natural plump to their lips, Restylane Kysse  is delivering amazing results for overall plumpness and a natural feel.

What can I expect with lip filler?

The cost is fully dependent on how much filler you need, the type of filler being used, and lastly the person injecting you. On average the cost of lip filler in Houston, TX can range from $600-$900 per syringe. Cost should not be your deciding factor when decided if and when to get filler. Choosing a skilled and experienced injector is crucial in securing the results you desire as well as avoiding any complications. While lip filler can last anywhere from 6 months to a year, it is recommended that each patient get a touch up in the 6-9 month time frame. Choosing the right injector to make sure you’re receiving consistent results will make for an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

During your initial appointment, plan on being there about 1 hour. During this time, Dr. Gordon will discuss with you what you are looking to achieve, his suggestions on products, risks and complications and total costs. Once you have signed your consents, we will take before pictures and begin the prepping process. Lip filler can be painful, this is why we take extra care to ensure the best experience for every patient. He has extensive experience numbing the lips using a few different methods. First and most common is a topical numbing cream that takes about 20-30 minutes to fully take effect. Second is the use of what’s known as a dental block. This involves the injection of lidocaine on the inside of the mouth where the lips meet the gums. Most patients report not feeling these injections at all and this takes effect pretty quickly as well. Whatever your comfort level is, we are happy to find the best suitable option for you.

After you are prepped and numbed Dr. Gordon begins the injection process. He carefully injects and examines your lips for placement of the filler to ensure the best results. It’s meticulous and Dr. Gordon takes every opportunity to make sure the placement of the filler will give you the best results. Afterwards, we will take a few after photos and provide you with an ice pack to help with the swelling. Swelling and bruising is very common with lip filler but is temporary. We do offer a natural remedy consisting of Arnica and Bromelaine to help with swelling or bruising if you wish to cut the time in half. After about 3-5 days this should subside. As a first time patient, we take it easy on you and take the “less is more” approach. We can always add more if needed, but it’s harder to take away.

Lip filler is a great way to make a subtle but noticeable change in your appearance, something you can “test drive” so to speak. You can continue perfecting your look with time, or if you decide it’s not for you, you can simply let your own body dissolve and get rid of it in a few months. While lip fillers tend to exede most of our patient’s expectations, they are not for everyone, and we do offer other modalities for slightly fuller lips. You can ask Dr. Gordon for the famous “lip flip” which consists of a small unit of Botox or Dysport right above the lips which relaxes the muscles and gives a soft natural pout. You can also ask how an Ultherapy lip treatment can help you achieve the look that you want.
